Essential Vastu Tips for Your New Home

Essential Vastu Tips for Your New Home: A Room-by-Room Guide to Positive Energy

Congratulations on your new home! New houses aren’t just a good investment, they will provide a foundation for your family’s aspirations and your well-being as well. Modern styles of building typically emphasize the number of square feet in the home and how attractive the facade is; however, ancient Indian wisdom of Vastu Shastra is all about the balance of energy throughout the home.

At Prop Glocal, we believe that if a home has been designed properly then home occupants will awaken refreshed each morning and retire peacefully each evening. Vastu Shastra integrates the five elements of Nature; Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space to bring health, prosperity and emotional well-being to the home.

Whether you are moving into an apartment or a house, the following Vastu principles can dramatically improve your quality of life. Let’s go through each room in your new home and find out some key ways that Vastu Shastra can be applied.

The Importance of Vastu Shastra

Understanding the significance of Vastu for a contemporary family is crucial before examining particular rooms. Vastu is not a form of superstitious folklore, but an established system of architecture focusing on the flows of energy through the built environment.

  • Enhanced Mental clarity: A significant benefit of proper directional alignment in Vastu is that it minimizes confusion and stress; allowing family members to make better decisions.
  • Improved Financial Prosperity: Through the use of Vastu, you can create environments that bring in opportunities for financial prosperity (particularly to the north in your home). In addition, effort put into maintaining these areas free of clutter will assist in continuing that flow into your life.
  • Improvement in Health: Proper placement and direction of the kitchen and bedroom (associated with the fire element) will help to reduce the risk of chronic fatigue(s) and other health issues.
  • Improvement in Relationships: By properly selecting the right colours, sizes of furniture and overall design of each room, it has been found that there will be less stress and conflict in most cases between husband and wife, parent and child.
  • Increase in Positive Energy (Sattva): A Vastu compliant home will nurture and neutralize all negative energy from the outside environment, thereby contributing positively to an upbeat atmosphere within the home.
  • Assured Career Advancement: Successful people stay motivated at their jobs because of the energy from the Southwest to Northeast direction will be flowing (governing) within the home of those successful individuals.

Vastu for the Living Room

The living room is your house’s showcase, a place to entertain visitors and to develop strong family ties.

  • Proper Orientation: The best locations are north and east because they provide access to sunlight and positive energy from the universe.
  • Seating Arrangement: The head of the household should be seated in either the east or north side of the room whenever they are seated. Make sure that you do not have your back to the entrance door.
  • Furniture Arrangement: Large couches and tables must be placed in the south or west sides of the living room. Keep the northeast corner of the living room uncluttered and open.
  • Electronics: The best location for your television and sound system is in the south east corner of the living room.
  • Professional Tip: Place a painting of a sunrise in the eastern part of the living room to bring new energy into the room. Avoid pictures of crying people or war images.

Vastu for the Pooja Room (Prayer Room)

Your home’s spiritual centre is the Pooja room. In fact, you can have an area in the corner of your modern flat devoted to Pooja.

  • Ideal Direction: The best direction for a Pooja room is northeast (Ishanya Kon); if that’s not possible, east or north would suffice.
  • Placement: You should never build a Pooja room below a staircase or adjoining to a bathroom wall.
  • Position While Praying: When praying, always face east or north.
  • Lighting: When lighting your Pooja room, use ghee lamps or soft, constant LEDs as the light source. A good amount of natural daylight is also provided, though the deity should not be positioned where it’s in the direct sunshine.
  • Pro Tip: The Pooja room should be located at an elevated position (not on the floor) and is to be cleaned daily. Also, no shoes or any form of clutter should be stored in this room.

Vastu for the Kitchen

The kitchen signifies the Fire element (Agni) and due to poor management, health issues and financial issues may arise.

  • Best Location: South East corner of the house. This is where Agni resides. The second-best location is North-West.
  • Cooking Position: The chef should face East when preparing food. There is a secondary position of facing North. Facing South while cooking is not acceptable.
  • Sink versus Stove: Water (sink) and Fire (stove) should be separated with two feet at a minimum.
  • Storage: The ideal locations for storing pulses and grains are the South or West.
  • Good Tip: Refrigerators can be positioned in the North-West, Southwest, or West. Refrigerators should not be located in the Northeast corner of the kitchen.

Vastu for the Dining Room

The dining room is the place where food becomes energy; you want your dining room to be a warm and inviting space.

  • Direction: Most preferably West/East direction (it should also be in the West Side if it is connected to the Kitchen).
  • Dining Table Shape: Square/Rectangular dining tables are preferred over any other type of dining table shape.
  • Dining Table Orientation: When dining, all family members should be looking away from the table and to the East or North direction (looking to the South will create conflict between the eaters).
  • Decor: Fruit, flowers and landscapes in the form of paintings create an abundance. Mirrors that directly reflect the eaters should be avoided (as they double the food and exhaust the energy of the eaters).
  • Pro Tip: The dining table should be kept clean and free from clutter, so that the table does not become a work area or storage area.

Vastu for the Bedroom

Health is based on adequate sleep. The next most important thing is to properly configure where your master bedroom is located.

  • Master Bedroom Direction: The southwest is the best direction to put the master bedroom for the head of the family because this direction gives the individual for stability and grounding.
  • Children’s Bedroom: Children’s bedrooms should be located in either the west or the northwest direction so that they can develop discipline and concentration.
  • Bed Placement: The position of the bed should be facing south with the head of the person sleeping on it towards the south. Never try to sleep with your head facing north as this will cause you to experience magnetic repulsion.
  • Mirrors: Never place a mirror facing your bed as it can cause insomnia and third-party interference in your relationship.
  • Pro Tip: The use of light-hued soft colours on the walls (such as beige, light blue or green) is encouraged – all electronic devices and workstations in the master bedroom should be removed so that you can enjoy intimate moments.

Vastu for the Bathroom

Bathrooms are an important part of our life and serve as areas of waste water and negative energies; therefore, they should be strategically placed.

  • Ideal Direction: Bathrooms are best placed in the West or South-East directions to allow for fast dissipation of negative energies.
  • Forbidden Direction: You should never build a bathroom in the North-East corner (Ishanya direction) because it disrupts the spiritual/wealth energy of the home.
  • Toilet Placement: Toilets should face the North-South direction (i.e. not facing East-West). Do not build a toilet above a Pooja room.
  • Ventilation: The bathroom should be properly ventilated with an exhaust fan that works well; they must be always clean and dry.
  • TIP:  Always keep the lid of the toilet and the bathroom door closed to stop energy loss from the bathroom area to the living area.

Vastu for Lighting

Positive energy takes on a physical form – light. The design of the light will directly affect how one feels about being in that particular room.

  • Northeast Area: Get as much natural light into this area as possible. Make use of large windows or skylights, and keep it bright.
  • Southwest Area: Use warm lighting (yellow/orange) for a calming, grounding, restful energy.
  • Directional Lamps: Use up-lighting lampshades in your living areas; this facilitates expanded, lucid consciousness.
  • Do Not Use: Fluorescent tube lighting directly above the bed or dining table will create excessive stimulation. Broken, flickering, or inoperative bulbs should be changed immediately; they represent unproductive energy.
  • Tip: A Himalayan salt lamp works well in a living or bedroom setting to dissipate electromagnetic radiation and purify the air

Vastu for Colours

Vastu greatly relies on the colours used. Each colour provides a special feeling and/ or vibrational energy to an area.

  • East: Growth and Health – Light Green, Blue, Beige
  • West: Stability and Creativity – Pale Blue, Grey, White, Light Brown
  • North: Wealth and Career – Green, Brown, Light Yellow
  • South: Fame and Strength – Pink, Orange, Light Red (don’t use dark red or black)
  • Pooja Room: White, Light Yellow, Saffron
  • Bedroom: Avoid black, dark grey and/or bright red. Use softer colours such as pastels, lavender or peach.
  • Tip: Main entrance door colours should be light and inviting, e.g. yellow, light brown and/or green; never black.

Vastu for Windows

Windows act as the lungs for your house providing fresh air circulation along with the life force or “prana.”

  • Window Area – The total area of your windows should equal around 15 – 20% of your floor area.
  • Window Direction – Your largest windows need to be located at the north and east sides of your home with smaller sized windows placed at the south and west sides.
  • Window Placement – The window cannot be directly across from your front door (the rush of energy flows too fast out). Windows should not be placed into the extreme corners of any room.
  • Window Frames and Grilles – Wood frames are preferred at the north and east sides; whereas metal frames are better at the south and west sides.
  • Tips – For best results, keep the windows clean and open them each morning between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. to allow “Amrit Vela” or “nectar hour” energy to enter the house.
